Veep urges filmmakers, actors to focus on substance over visibility

Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has emphasized the importance of strategic investment and professionalism in Africa's film industry.

Speaking at the inaugural Regal Film Festival and Awards (REFFA) 2025 in Accra, she advised new filmmakers and actors to focus on producing high-quality content with depth, rather than seeking mere visibility. 

The event brought together industry professionals from Ghana and across Africa, celebrating outstanding achievements in filmmaking and storytelling.

Prof. Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang praised REFFA for creating a platform that showcases African talent and opens doors for regional and global market access.

 She highlighted REFFA's role in promoting African stories globally while maintaining cultural authenticity. 

The Vice President stressed the need for purposeful and excellent storytelling to resonate with audiences worldwide. She also urged investors and stakeholders to view the film industry as a long-term investment opportunity, citing its potential for job creation, cultural diplomacy, and economic growth.

The Regal Film Festival and Awards is a pan-African platform that celebrates excellence, innovation, and cultural storytelling in African cinema. It honours outstanding talents across various categories, featuring film screenings, panel discussions, masterclasses, and a Culture Night showcasing African heritage. The awards ceremony recognized achievements across numerous categories, celebrating the diversity and quality of films submitted from over 21 countries. 

 The movie ‘3 Cold Dishes’ directed by Oluseyi Asurf Amuwa and produced by Grammy award-wining artiste, Burna Boy won big on the night including Best Actress, Most Promising actor, Achievement in Production Design, Achievement in Sound, Best Cinematography. 

They also walked away with a brand new car for winning the Best Picture award.

The maiden REFFA Awards concluded with a strong message: African cinema is a rapidly thriving industry with stories that resonate globally. 

The success of the festival in Accra signals a powerful new chapter for regional collaboration and international recognition of African film.
