Reggae revival programme to be launched
A monthly programme dubbed ‘Accra Reggae Weekend,’ to help boost traditional roots reggae, will be launched at 6.00pm on Friday, July 28 at the 4Syte-TV Mansion, East Legon in Accra.
‘Accra Reggae Weekend’ will be a regular circuit that stirs up music from the genre’s golden age of the 1970s through to contemporary stuff performed live by Ghanaian artistes.
The project is being put together by the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA), 4Syte-TV and Roots Addiction.
Kwasi Nyarko Ofei a reggae artist and radio/television presenter, also known as Root Eye, is the brain behind the programme.
He said every last week of the month, from Wednesday through Sunday, five venues in Accra will host in turn, three artistes supported by a live band. All events will be filmed for later broadcast on television
The selected venues are Bermuda Bar at Abelenkpe, Champs Sports Bar at Paloma on the Ring Road, The Republic Bar at Osu, Root & Soul at Dansoman and the Piano Bar near the Teshie Nungua Estates.
Some of the acts scheduled to perform at the bashes include Knii Lante, Oga Chuks, Sammy Nukpese, Culture Levi, Kojo Kombolo, Paapa Wastik, Osagyefo, Iwan, Ras
Kuuku and JahWi. They will be supported by bands such as Rainbow Generation, Big Hills and Protégé.
Roots reggae has been a popular style of music in this country for a long time and has been extensively exploited by highlife and gospel music practitioners.
