Industry 'no agye agu' - Akosua Adjepong on state of Ghana music

Highlife musician, Akosua Adjepong, says there is nothing good to be said about the Ghana music industry in recent times.

In a recent interview with RAJAB Media GH, the revered musician cited lack of seriousness by major stakeholders as a major setback for the industry.

She said although Ghana has rich rhythms to explore, the industry has been slacking compared to other countries such as Nigeria and Senegal, where musicians are taking advantage of that vacuum.

“I went to Seychelles, and I heard them play songs from different countries. I heard Nigerian music, Senegal and Mali. Now the question is, why is Ghana not taking advantage of these rhythms?’

“As it stands now, it seems Nigerians are even playing better Highlife music than Ghana. If you listen to songs from Senegal and Mali, you will notice that they are similar to rhythms from the Northern part of Ghana.

“So why are we suffering? I will keep saying that the right things have not been done,” she said.

Just like the movie industry, creatives in the music industry continue to pour out their frustrations about its snail paced growth and Akosua Adjepong’s remarks add up to the ongoing complaints.

Interestingly, conversations about the music industry and the way forward continue to arrest the attention of industry players particularly in these times when Nigerian musicians are playing at major world events including World Cup.
