Marriage is about responsibility not just love and emotions-Duncan Williams

Founder and General Overseer of Action Chapel International, Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams, has shared his views on why many people face problems in marriage. He said marriage is about responsibility and purpose, not just love or emotions.

Speaking on TV3’s New Day with Cookie Tee on Friday, January 23, 2026, the well-known preacher explained that being a woman does not automatically make someone a wife, just as being a man does not automatically make someone a husband or father.

In his view, marriage requires preparation, maturity, and the ability to care for another person.

“One reason many women are not married is that they are not wife material. In the same way, some men are not husband material,” he said. “There is a difference between being a woman and being a wife, and between being a man and being a husband or father.”

Archbishop Duncan-Williams said many people enter marriage without being ready for the responsibility it brings. He explained that if a person cannot take care of themselves, it becomes difficult to take care of a spouse or family.

He also made it clear that marriage is not only about love or money.

“I’m not talking about having a lot of money,” he said. “I’m talking about being prepared, ready, and responsible. You must be able to take care of another person.”

Citing the Bible, he said marriage is about purpose, not just feelings. He explained that the Bible says, “For this purpose shall a man leave his father and mother,” not “for love.” (Read also Begging for wedding money shows you are not ready for marriage – Duncan-Williams)

“This shows that marriage is about purpose, and purpose comes with responsibility,” he said.

The archbishop also spoke about the role of parents in preparing children for marriage.

“Mothers must train their daughters to become wives, and fathers must train their sons to become husbands and fathers,” he said. “These things are not properly taught in our schools.”

He added that becoming a wife or husband is something a person grows into.

“You are born a woman, but you become a wife. You are born a man, but you become a husband,” he said.

Archbishop Duncan-Williams warned that marrying without maturity can lead to serious problems. He said many young couples struggle because they were not ready when they got married.

“I have seen many people, including some of my own children who married before the age of 30, face serious challenges. Marriage needs maturity,” he said.
