Miss Tourism contestants discuss tourism in Tema

The 10 contestants selected to vie for this year’s Miss Tourism Ghana crown have visited the Presbyterian Church in Tema Community One. The purpose of the visit was to discuss how the Greenwich Meridian which falls exactly at the location of the Presbyterian Church could serve as a major tourist attraction.

The Director of Events and Operations for the Miss Tourism Ghana Organisation, Mrs Delphine J. Brew- Hammond, said the Meridian passes through eight countries in the world and Ghana was privileged to be part of these countries.

She, therefore, called on stakeholders in the tourism sector to man up the challenge of reaping the tourism and economic potential from the Meridian.

“There’s no reason why Ghana cannot benefit economically from this. We can put in efforts to make it a useful tourist attraction that will create job opportunities and generate income to support development projects in Tema and Ghana as a whole,” she said.

After the brainstorming session, the contestants visited the offices of the Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE), Isaac Ashai Odamten, and his staff to discuss the tourism potentials of the Meridian and the way forward to make it a “useful venture”.

The MCE challenged all the contestants to consider proposing a strategic project that would best promote Ghana's place on the Greenwich Meridian Line route.

After the meeting with the MCE, the Miss Tourism pageant team also met with the Metro Director of Ghana Education Service, Mr Kwesi Hutchful, in Tema.

"The Miss Tourism Ghana Organisation is about equipping Ghana's youth with all they need to succeed as leaders," Mrs Brew-Hammond said. "We want to expose these young ladies to leadership and erase the perception that young women cannot take leadership roles in the society,” she stated.

Miss Tourism Ghana is sponsored by Crown Apartamento, DaViva, Lele Foods, Darling Hair, Metropolitan Insurance Co. Ltd, Max International, African Sun Amber Hotel and Fiesta with support from the Ghana Tourism Federation, Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Ghana Tourism Authority and Ghana Tourist Development Co.
