Ohemaa Woyeje tells what one needs to be a good DJ
For Ghanaian Disc Jockey (DJ) Ohemaa Woyeje, it takes more than just one’s ability to shout and hype to be a good DJ.
Weighing in on the discussion of what made a good DJ in modern times in a recent interview with Graphic Showbiz, the mother of two explained that the entertainment industry had been pumped to accept the notion that the skill of DJing was best demonstrated when the DJ cracked the disc and shouted, a notion she strongly disputed.

She noted that the art of DJing had evolved and now encompassed more than just the hype; instead, in her opinion, it was about taking the audience on a journey while using honed craft that didn't deviate from conveying a specific message.
“The DJ’s craft is everything that goes beyond knowing your equipment and possessing the necessary technical skills. It begins when you identify what your audience want.
“It’s easy to get distracted from the fundamental art of DJing, with so much noise about what you should be using, playing, posting and wearing these things are important, but what makes a good DJ is how you’re able to carry your audience along on a journey and how they yearn for you when you are not in their presence”, she told Graphic Showbiz.
The sensational DJ and radio host said while society was slowly coming around to accept female DJs, it was important for women to solidify their position and craft with hard work and confidence to give them the opportunity to get the necessary traction.
“There are people who attack your personality as a female DJ. If you are not confident, you will be discouraged, but what you should do as a female DJ to keep going in this industry is to master your craft, develop a thick skin for all the criticisms, strive for excellence and watch society applaud your efforts,” she noted.
