Steve Martin debunks Father of the Bride 3 rumours

Father of the Bride 3 isn't happening—at least, according to Steve Martin. The actor debunked rumours of a third film via Twitter last Monday, June 16.

"So excited to read I'm doing Father of the Bride 3 since I haven't seen a script or been offered the role!" the 68-year-old actor wrote.

Martin's friend and writer Joyce Carol Oates also chimed in. "Hoping I will be involved too since I have not seen script, or offered a role. Fingers crossed!" she joked. Martin replied: "We're on equal footing!"

The Saturday Night Live alum starred in the remake of the Spencer Tracy classic in 1991 as nervous dad George Banks trying to face the fact that his daughter Annie, played by Kimberly Williams-Paisley, is ready to walk down the aisle.

The comedy hit also starred Diane Keaton (Nina Banks), Martin Short (Franck Eggelhoffer), George Newbern (Bryan MacKenzie) and Kieran Culkin (Matty Banks). 

In 1995, the actors reprised their roles in Father of the Bride Part II, where George had to manage taking care of both Annie and his wife Nina during their dual pregnancies. It was reported that a third film would focus on a gay wedding with Matty announcing his engagement to the son of a U.S. Navy Seal.

Fans of the films flocked to social media last Monday with their initial excitement that the Banks family was returning for a third installment. Now, however, some "chipper" chicken may work best to drown their sorrows.
