TGMA26 ‘Big 5’ nominees: Hits and misses

ON the night of Saturday, March 15, Accra International Conference Centre (AICC) played host to unveiling of nominees for the Big 5 categories of  the 26th Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA).

The Big 5 categories  represent the pinnacle of achievement in the Ghanaian music industry and they are Record of the Year, Album of the Year, Telecel Most Popular Song of the Year, New Artiste of the Year and Artiste of the Year

Prior to that, Charterhouse, organisers of TGMA, had announced the other categories hourly on social media.

The night which was graced by Ghanaian music industry stakeholders, and fans was laced with performances from some musicians.

Rapper Lyrical Joe thrilled with an amazing act, Gospel sensation Mavis Asante uplifted spirits with gospel vibes and Hiplife musician Ayisi kept the energy alive with his dynamic stage presence.

The event which forms part of activities marking the 26th edition of TGMA  was a mix of excitement, disbelief and celebration as the list of nominees sparked cheers, sighs and heated debates among patrons.  

Between performances, guests took the opportunity to engage in conversations, make industry connections and speculate about potential winners of this year’s awards.  

One of the most discussed moments of the night was the unveiling of the Artiste of the Year category. For some, it was a moment of pride as their favourite artistes secured a spot, while others expressed disappointment their picks didn’t make the cut.

Kofi Kinaata and Empress Gifty who some fans believed deserved a spot on the ultimate prize list missed out.

“How did Kofi Kinaata not make the list? This is shocking," one patron shouted at the event.

Also, Sarkodie’s absence from the list generated some conversation. The rapper has for the past five years or so always been nominated in the Artiste of the year category.

The battle for the ultimate crown, Artiste of the Year is among King Promise, Black Sherif, Stonebwoy, Kweku Smoke, King Paluta, Team Eternity and Joe Mettle.
