Congratulations, WAEC

Congratulations, WAEC

I wish to congratulate the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) on the good work done in making sure that the 2024 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) was conducted successfully, despite the challenges faced by WAEC in getting the requisite funds early from the government to help them in their operations.

According to the Daily Graphic publication on Monday, June 24, 2024, WAEC did not hesitate to proceed with the examination.

The examination commenced on Monday, July 8, 2024, with English and Religious and Moral Education being written, ending on Monday, July 15, 2024, with Arabic.

I appeal to the government to pay the amount of GH¢48.70 million left to WAEC, so they can use some to pay examiners whose payments are always delayed. That will enable them to mark the papers on time.

It would also prevent further delays in the release of the BECE results making it possible to get back to the old calendar system, which was disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Besides, it would enable the examiners to mark with precision.

Finally, I urge the government to make advance payments to the WAEC in future. This would enhance and promote academic standards.

Abraham Bondzie,
Winneba.
