People & Places: Accra Sports Stadium

Located in the heart of Accra, the national capital, Ghana’s premier stadium, the Accra Sports Stadium has been a cornerstone of sports and entertainment in the country since its inauguration in 1962 with a football match between Accra XI and Kumasi XI.

With a seating capacity of 40,000, this iconic stadium has hosted numerous high-profile events, including football matches, rugby union, and professional boxing bouts.

In 2004 the facility was renamed ‘Ohene Djan Stadium’ after Ghana's first Director of Sports, following renovations.

However, the name change was met with opposition, and in 2011, the stadium's name was changed back to Accra Sports Stadium without official announcement before being reverted.

As part of preparations to host the 2008 African Cup of Nations in Ghana, the stadium underwent significant renovations in 2007 to meet FIFA standards.

The upgrades included modern dressing rooms, VIP stands, and improved media facilities, bringing the stadium's capacity to 40,000.

The renovations were completed in October 2007, and the stadium was inaugurated with a four-nation tournament, which Ghana won.

The Accra Sports Stadium, under the management of the National Sports Authority (NSA), is home to the national soccer teams and prominent soccer clubs, including Accra Hearts of Oak, Accra Lions FC, and Great Olympics.

Aside from league matches, the stadium has hosted numerous international matches, including the 1978 African Cup of Nations final, which Ghana won 2-0 against Uganda, and nine matches during the 2000 African Cup of Nations jointly hosted by Ghana and Nigeria.

Additionally, the venue has hosted important professional boxing events, including a famous bout between David Kotei and Danny Lopez in 1976.

The stadium's facilities include a grass surface, tennis courts, and sports sections for judo, boxing, and other activities.

Visitors have praised the stadium's vibrant atmosphere, even when empty, and its spaciousness makes it suitable for hosting events like concerts and church programmes.

Despite its challenges, the Accra Sports Stadium remains a vital part of Ghana's sports landscape, serving as a hub for soccer, athletics, and cultural events.
