In the heart of the Anlo Traditional Area in the Volta Region stands the Awomefia, a revered institution embodying ancient tradition and modern leadership.
The title "Awomefia" literally means "king in seclusion," reflecting the sacred and spiritual nature of the role.
The Awomefia serves as both the spiritual custodian and political head of the Anlo State, presiding over 36 clans. His duties span cultural preservation, conflict resolution, land administration, and advocacy for development. As a symbol of unity and continuity, the Awomefia plays a vital role in maintaining the rich cultural heritage of the Anlo people.
The current Awomefia, Togbi Sri III, has been a beacon of hope and progress since his installation on February 23, 2011.
He is the 16th Awomefia, succeeding the late Togbi Adeladza II, and restoring continuity to a royal lineage dating back to Togbi Sri I in the 15th century.
Togbi Sri III has positioned himself as a practical leader intent on driving social progress, launching initiatives to promote education, youth empowerment, and local enterprise through the Hogbe Development Fund.
He has courted international partnerships, seeking investment in agro-processing and tourism, and has mediated national disputes, including the Bimbilla chieftaincy conflict, at the government's request – a testament to his influence beyond Volta's borders.
Despite the ceremonial grandeur surrounding his stool, Togbe Sri III remains committed to upholding tradition and custom, living under strict seclusion and adhering to ancient rites that preserve the sanctity of his office.
Togbi Sri III's reign has not been without controversy, but he has asserted his authority with firm, disciplined leadership, suspending errant chiefs when necessary.
His outreach to the Ewe diaspora, particularly through engagement with the Council of Ewe Associations of North America (CEANA), underscores his vision of a globally connected Anlo State rooted in cultural pride.
Today, Togbi Sri III stands as a bridge between heritage and modernity – a ruler bound by custom yet driven by progress. In him, the ancient echoes of Anlo kingship meet the forward march of a changing Ghana – a timeless figure shaping his people's destiny from behind the sacred veil of the Awomefia stool.
