Help reduce drug abuse

A drug is a chemical substance that is taken into the body to cure or provide relief from diseases. A drug can however be abused when it is taken without being prescribed by a doctor.

There are, however, certain substances which are described as hard drugs and are dangerous to the body.

These include cocaine, tobacco, marijuana, etc.

Young people are likely to encounter the abuse of drugs when they leave the security of their families and attend school.

Youngsters who experiment with hard drugs begin with the abuse of marijuana popularly known as ‘wee’ so as to associate with particular groups while in school.

What the youth wrongly believe is that the abuse of drugs would provide them with the needed stamina to study for long hours, especially when they are under pressure to study as exams beckon.

Unfortunately, the abuse of drugs rather causes such students to experience academic difficulties.

Most of drug abusers usually absent themselves from school and other academic activities and sometimes this result in them dropping out of school.

Students who drop out of school, more often than not, become a burden on society as a number of them resort to petty robberies; full scale armed robbery or become delinquents.

If such youngsters do not have a strong family support system, they are never able to kick this vice and end up destroying their otherwise bright future.

It is therefore very important for all families to monitor children, especially during their teen years to make sure that they are not exposed to any illicit drugs.

Continuous education of students in the junior and senior high schools is crucial if this social menace can be reduced drastically.

Chances are that youngsters who do not abuse drugs during junior and senior high school period would not engage in the vice later in life.
