• Mahama accuses Akufo-Addo of weakening democratic institutions

    The presidential candidate for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has expressed concern over the state of Ghana’s democratic institutions, claiming they have been severely undermined under the current Akufo-Addo-led administration.

    He argued that the strides Ghana has made in strengthening its democracy since 1992 have been reversed.

    “These last eight years have been very challenging for our democratic institutions. All the gains we have made in strengthening them since 1992 have been eroded,” he stated.

    Mr. Mahama made these comments during a governance forum in Accra on Thursday evening, October 31, 2024.

    Google has announced that Twi, one of Ghana's most widely spoken languages, is now available on Google Voice Search, Gboard talk-to-type, and Google Translate voice input. 

    This inclusion is part of Google’s expansion of African language support, which now covers 15 new languages across the continent, enhancing accessibility for over 300 million people.

    Developed in collaboration with Google's AI Research Center in Accra, this update enables Ghanaians to search, type, and translate directly in Twi using voice commands. This integration will allow millions of Twi speakers to interact naturally with technology in their native language.

  • Transport operators refute reports of fare increases, urge public to ignore claims

    Transport operators in Ghana have clarified that there is no increase in public transport fares, urging the public to disregard recent media reports claiming a 15 percent hike. 

    In a press release issued today, the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) condemned the reports as misleading, suggesting that they could be part of a deliberate effort to stir discontent among commuters.

    "Our attention has been drawn to news going around in some media houses headlined ‘Transport Operators announce 15% increase in fares effective 2nd November,’” the statement read. 

  • NPP’s John Kwame Duodu calls for issue-based debate between Bawumia and Mahama

    The First Vice Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Atwima Nwabiagya South Constituency, John Kwame Duodu has criticized former President John Mahama for his recent comments directed at the NPP and Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. 

    Mr. Duodu condemned Mahama’s remarks, particularly the phrase “It’s about the economy, stupid,” a slogan famously used during Bill Clinton’s campaign, calling it “distasteful” and inappropriate for the nation’s political discourse.

    "I least expected such unpalatable statements from the former President and NDC flag bearer, considering his stature in Ghanaian politics,” Duodu stated. 

    He pointed out the calls from Ghanaians and civil society organizations for “issue-based campaigns devoid of such negative tendencies that have the potential to mar the calm political atmosphere.”

    Former President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kwesi Nyantakyi, has filed a defamation suit against sports journalist Dan Kweku Yeboah and some media platforms demanding GH₵10 million in damages. 

    Nyantakyi claims the defendants made “reckless and defamatory” allegations that have harmed his reputation and caused him significant personal distress.

    He filed the suit on October 28, 2024 and it is specifically pointing to statements made by Dan Kwaku Yeboah on radio on Peace FM’s morning programme.

    The body of Benjamin Ndyamuhaki, a 36-year-old Manchester United fan allegedly killed by an Arsenal supporter, was laid to rest on Wednesday, Ocotober 30 in Kabungo Cell, Katenga Parish, Kaharo Sub County, Kabale District, Western Uganda. Friends and family gathered in sorrow to bid farewell to Ndyamuhaki, the fifth of eleven children.

    The fine is far greater than the world's total GDP, estimated at $110 trillion by the International Monetary Fund.

    There is controversy in the suit challenging the 'anti-gay bill' over the existence of a financial impact analysis purportedly prepared by the Speaker of Parliament before the bill was passed.

    At the Supreme Court on Thursday [Oct 31, 2024], lawyers from the Office of the Attorney-General and the plaintiff challenging the passage of the bill wondered why the Speaker of Parliament had not made the analysis available since his lawyers stated in July 2024 that such a document indeed existed.

    A Chief State Attorney, Sylvia Adusu, in moving an application for extension of time to enable the A-G file its statement of case, said the A-G, which is the second defendant, had been forced to delay its statement of case due to the failure of the Speaker to produce the analysis.
