Any coup in Uganda could be crushed in a day - Museveni's son

The son of Uganda's President Yoweri Museveni says it would take the country's army less than a day to put down any attempt by mutinous soldiers to stage a coup, similar to the one that ousted Guinea's President Alpha Condé.

Lt Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who is the army's commander of land forces, tweeted that mutinous soldiers would be subjected to "discipline".

He included a picture of Col Mamady Doumbouya, the officer who led the coup in Guinea.

Last week, Mr Museveni called on the coup leaders in Guinea to "get out", saying that the takeover was a "step backwards".

"We had them in the 1960s - they were part of Africa's problems so I condemn the coup," he told France 24.

Mr Condé - Guinea's three-term president - was removed from power on 5 September by soldiers from an elite unit.

They accused him of mismanagement and corruption.

The coup has been widely condemned outside the West African nation, but many Guineans have expressed support for the ousting of the 83-year-old president, while urging the army to facilitate a return to civilian rule.
