Ghana, Liberia envoys renew push for stronger West African cooperation in Beijing

Ghana’s Ambassador to China, Kojo Bonsu, has reaffirmed the country’s commitment to deepening regional cooperation in Beijing after paying a courtesy call on Liberia’s Ambassador to China, Thomas McKinley, who also serves as Dean of the West African Group of Ambassadors.

The meeting, held at the Liberian Embassy in Beijing, highlighted the growing collaboration among West African diplomats stationed in China. Ambassador McKinley, who has served in the Asian powerhouse for close to two decades, welcomed Ambassador Bonsu warmly, praising Ghana’s continued leadership in advancing unity within the subregion.

The two envoys engaged in what was described as a lively exchange covering trade relations, cultural diplomacy and the evolving role of African missions in China.

Their discussions underscored the importance of coordinated regional engagement, particularly at a time when African countries are seeking deeper economic and development partnerships with Beijing.

Ambassador Bonsu reiterated Ghana’s commitment to strengthening ties with its West African neighbours while championing Africa’s collective interests. “Ghana remains committed to strengthening regional cooperation and promoting African unity in China,” he said, stressing that collaboration is central to achieving shared diplomatic and economic goals.

Ambassador McKinley echoed this sentiment, applauding Ghana’s approach to regional diplomacy and expressing optimism about expanded cooperation among West African missions. Both ambassadors agreed that opportunities exist in trade, investment, sports, tourism and cultural exchange, and pledged to work together to harness these areas for mutual benefit.

The visit forms part of Ambassador Bonsu’s broader efforts to bolster Ghana’s diplomatic presence in China, attract investment and deepen economic ties. His mission has focused on promoting Ghana’s business potential, advancing partnership opportunities and enhancing the visibility of Ghanaian culture abroad.
