Schoolchildren sharpen skills in tennis

Over 60 juvenile tennis players from the Adabraka and Osu communities have attended a tennis clinic organised by the Peter Mensah Sports Foundation (PMSports), at the Ghana Tennis Club at Adabraka in Accra.

The children, aged between eight and 14, were taken through technical, physical and complete tennis training skills including serving, return of serve, baseline rallying, approaching the net, aggressive baseliner and counter puncher.

The event, according to the organisers, was to boost the performance of young and upcoming players within the two communities.

Mr Peter Mensah, a UK-based tennis coach who doubles as CEO of PM Sports together with Mr Yahaya Maccauley, an International Tennis Federation (ITF) Level Two Coach, George Abban and Andrew Taylor, were the resource persons for the one-day event.

In his closing remarks, Mr Mensah said his outfit intended to make the event an annual affair, hoping to introduce children to the modern ways of the sport.

“For some time now, Ghana’s tennis has taken a downward trend so the only way we can find a lasting solution to it is through these development pathways where players are given the opportunity to experience the best technical, physical and complete tennis training”.

“The Ghana Tennis Federation cannot do it alone so it’s a good thing that my team and I have come on board to help find an immediate solution to this declining sport. Returning to my motherland, Ghana, to give back to the society has always been a dream," he added.
