Chorkor benefits from sustainable aquaculture, food security training
Educators, students and professionals within the suburb of Chorkor in Accra have benefited from a week-long training in modern aquaculture and sustainable food production practices.
The training was held from June 30 to July 5, 2025 as part of the Integrated Agriculture for Food Production, Education, Empowerment and Development (iFEED) Ghana initiative to link agriculture and social work.
It was hosted in partnership with the BASICS International, the Ghana Prison Service, the Auburn University, USA and the University of Ghana’s Departments of Marine and Fisheries Sciences and Social Work.
Participants were trained in fish cultivation and aquaponics systems and also received continuous sample lesson plans. They also received an educational tour of the CSIR Water Research Institute’s Aquaculture Research and Development Centre (ARDEC) in Akosombo, Eastern Region.
According to the Assistant Professor of Social Work of the Auburn University, Dr Felicia Tuggle, the community of Chorkor was chosen due to its rich cultural heritage and fishing tradition.
“The community faces persistent challenges related to food insecurity, youth unemployment and limited access to technical education. By bringing iFEED directly into the community, the training empowered local educators and professionals to become agents of change in their environments,” she said.
