The Mirror Editorial: Police use of social media to fight abuse commendable

The Ghana Police Service deserves commendation for its growing vigilance in monitoring social media and acting decisively on posts that expose abuse, particularly child abuse and domestic violence.

In a digital era where social media is often criticised for spreading misinformation and sensationalism, the Police have demonstrated that that social media platforms can also be powerful tools for justice and public protection.

For many years, abuse—especially in homes—increased in silence. Victims, most often women and children, were constrained by fear, stigma and social pressures that discouraged reporting. In many cases, traditional reporting channels felt inaccessible or ineffective.

The Mirror observes that social media has increasingly become a last resort for victims and witnesses to draw attention to cruelty and seek help.

By responding promptly to such online reports, the police have shown a firm commitment to protecting the vulnerable.

Recent cases in which police action followed viral posts have helped to restore public confidence in law enforcement.

These interventions signal that the Police are attentive to citizens’ concerns and willing to adapt modern policing methods to contemporary realities.

The Mirror is of the view that such action by the police also reinforces the message that abuse, regardless of where it occurs or how it is exposed, will not be tolerated.

Importantly, the Police’s responsiveness serves as a deterrent. The awareness that abusive acts can be recorded, shared and acted upon by authorities has the potential to reduce impunity.

It reassures the public that perpetrators can no longer hide behind privacy, influence or social standing. In this sense, social media has become an extension of community vigilance, with the Police playing a crucial role in translating online exposure into lawful action.

While applauding the Police, The Mirror emphasises that the fight against child abuse and domestic violence is a shared responsibility.

Families, communities, civil society organisations and the media all have roles to play in prevention, reporting and supporting victims.

We view the police’s proactive engagement with social media as a pathway to justice.

The Police are helping to build a safer society—one where abuse is confronted, perpetrators are held accountable, and victims are no longer left to suffer in silence. Well done, Ghana Police Service.
