1977 Year Group hands over refurbished dining hall to Opoku Ware School

The 1977 Year Group of Opoku Ware School in Kumasi, also known as the T-Year Group, has refurbished and modernised the Burgess Hall of the school.

The Burgess Hall used to be the dining hall when they were admitted to the school in 1972.

In their determination to upgrade and transform the educational infrastructure of the school, the T-Year Group tiled the hall, provided the needed furniture, constructed male and female washrooms and installed lighting systems and fans.

The group also fitted a new ceiling, repaired the roofing and improved the overall aesthetic presentation of the hall. The Burgess Hall had not witnessed any renovation since it was constructed.

So far, a total of GH¢202,000 has been spent to transform the hall into a modern conference facility.

Project in phases

The project, which was completed in three phases, commenced about five years ago when the group resolved to adopt the hall, the first of such adoption by any year group of the school.

Following an infrastructure audit, a Project Implementation Committee (PIC) was inaugurated to execute the Burgess Hall modernisation project.

Handover

During the handover from the T-Year Group to the management of the school at a colourful ceremony at the school, the Chairman of the T-Year Group Mr Stephen Antwi (Esq), in the company of other members of the PIC, including Messrs Yaw Prempeh, Kofi Sekyere, Kwame Agyeman (Esq.) and Yaw Adusei, implored management to implement strict maintenance protocols and acceptable asset management practices to justify the group’s investment into the facility.

Appreciation

The Headmaster of the school, Rev. Fr Owusu Sekyere, with his two assistants, Messrs Twum Amankwaa and Kwaku Yeboah, and other members of the school administration, on behalf of the school, extended their gratitude to the T-Year Group members for their generosity.

While agreeing to maintain the facility as requested by the group, he requested more chairs to augment the existing furniture.

The headmaster pleaded with other year groups to follow in the footsteps of the T-Year Group by adopting and modernising other buildings and blocks in the school.
