The MOU will provide schoolchildren with sustainable energy solutions, enhance energy conservation awareness, and develop practical skills contributing to a greener future and more sustainable communities.

The MoU

The initiative is set to run from June 2024 to December 2025, starting with a pilot programme at La Enobal Basic School and La Presbyterian Basic School. The project aligns with United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, including quality education, gender equality, affordable and clean energy, and climate action.

The MOU was signed at the Academic City campus in Accra. At the MoU signing ceremony, Ing. Dr Lucy Agyepong of Academic City said the initiative was not just an educational programme, but a step towards fostering a culture of sustainability among young children.

The project, she said, would equip the young ones with the knowledge and skills needed to contribute to a sustainable future of the country. Dr Agyepong reiterated the institution’s commitment to the success of the initiative, noting that it aligned with the university’s dedication to community development and innovative education.

Green4Clean

She believed the "Green4Clean" project would support the government's renewable energy initiatives through increasing awareness creation and education, promoting environmental awareness, encouraging collaboration and introducing students to potential career opportunities.

“The project aims to integrate renewable energy topics into Ghana’s educational curriculum, equipping young learners with essential knowledge and skills for the future,” she added. The "Green4Clean" project, implemented under the Technology and Entrepreneurship Centre of Academic City, will see engineering students mentor pupils from the basic schools.

The mentors will guide the pupils in developing their own sustainability interventions, benefiting their immediate communities, schools and themselves.

Additionally, the project will provide opportunities for the pupils to engage in various science projects, including learning about robotics, under the Coalition for Climate Entrepreneurs Lab, a collaboration with the U.S. Department of State at the Maker Space at the centre, as the country is actively striving to increase its adoption of renewable energy sources to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and promote sustainability.

The project is a vital step in educating younger generations about renewable energy technologies and energy efficiency.
