How the Ghana Armed Forces is supporting the rebuilding of homes following hurricane destruction in Jamaica

Ghanaian Engineering Reconstruction team of the Ghana Armed Forces and the 1 Engineering Regiment of the Jamaican Defence Force (JDF) have recorded significant progress in rebuilding homes in Black River and Saint Elizabeth communities following the recent Hurricane that struck Jamaica.

Following the disaster which occurred in October 2025, the government deployed 54 personnel from the Ghana Armed Forces‘ 14 Engineer Brigade, Engineer Contingent 1 to Jamaica to support national rebuilding efforts.

Communities in these areas in Jamaica were severely hit by the Hurricane Melissa and are being steadily rebuilt.

As part of Ghana’s humanitarian commitment, Ghana’s reconstruction team is working alongside international partners including the Jamaican Defence Force to rebuild homes and support livelihood of victims.

The mission reflects solidarity, service and shared resilience.

Leader of the Ghanaian Engineering Reconstruction team, Colonel Emmanuel Assiah met with Foreign Minister for Jamaica, Camina Johnson Smith upon the team’s arrival in Jamaica.

Camina Johnson Smith expressed her appreciation to the troops who have been deployed to Jamaica.

Kisha Webb, a resident of Black River and a victim of the Hurricane disaster expressed gratitude for the work done so far.

“We appreciate everything that you have done here and all the work men work so nice and I just want to thank the Jamaican Defence Force for helping us. I hope you all continue the good work,” she said.Kenesha Dawkins and Tashna Evans, residents of Saint Elizabeth also thanked both governments for the support extend in rebuilding their homes.
