KNUST confers honorary doctorates on Hackman Owusu Agyemang, 8 others

The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has conferred honorary doctorates, fellowship awards and corporate awards to some institutions in the country.

The honourees were recognised for their contributions spanning agriculture, pharmacy, engineering, publishing, the field of veterinary medicine and science, all tailored towards the growth of the university.

The personalities and corporate institutions were awarded during the 59th Congregation of the university, held at the Great Hall on November 29, 2025.

Notable among them was an alumnus and former Minister of State, Hackman Owusu Agyemang, who was recognised for his selfless service and outstanding contribution to the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, the KNUST Alumni Association, Ghana and the international community.

Another, a United States of America-based Engineer and Senior Scientist, Dr Mercy Nyamewaa Asiedu, whose pioneering work led to the invention of the Callascope, a low-cost self-administered cervical screening device, was also honoured.

She was recognised for her distinguished career in science and technology and for her insightful presentation as a lecturer for the 13th edition of the R.P. Baffour Memorial Lecturers.

An astute publisher, Kwabena Amponsah, received a Doctor of Letters for his many years of continuous support for the publishing industry in the country and the Publishing Studies Programme and practice in KNUST.

Similarly, Professor Johnson Kwaku Kwakye was recognised for his meritorious contribution to pharmacy education and practice as well as drug quality research and development.

Other awardees

An Agribusiness expert, Daniel Faahene Acquaye, was honoured for his significant contributions to the promotion and development of the agricultural sector, agricultural education and the general development of the KNUST.

For his immense contributions to the growth of the College of Engineering and his numerous engineering and consultancy services rendered to the KNUST and the nation as a whole, Dr Ben K.D. Asante, a former Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gas Company Limited, was also a beneficiary.

The first female Professor of KNUST, Professor Victoria Pearl Dzogbefia, was decorated as distinguished University Professor for outstanding contribution to growth in the field of Biotechnology and Biochemistry education during her over 30 years of service at KNUST.

For his part, Dr Andrew Quarcoopome was awarded a distinguished fellow for his invaluable contribution to veterinary medicine education and practice in KNUST and Ghana, while Emeritus Professor Francis Boakye had a distinguished service award in recognition of his meritorious service to academia, higher education in Ghana and the international community, among others.

Additionally, Sysmex West and Central Africa (SWCA) received a corporate award for its impact on humanity, the KNUST alumni association and the university, while the Volta River Authority also received a corporate award in recognition of its significant contribution to engineering education and practice in Ghana and beyond.

Gratitude

Expressing gratitude to the university on behalf of the awardees, Mr Agyemang said receiving an honour was not merely an acknowledgement of past contributions but a solemn and compelling call to deepen one’s service to society.

“If a university honours you, it is because your life has, in many ways, or significant ways, honoured humanity,” he said, stressing that the honorees would commit themselves anew to the work of national development.

“We commit ourselves to shaping institutions and becoming torchbearers soaring on the green eagle of knowledge and lighting paths for the next generation.

Today reminds us of something even deeper: that giving back is the highest form of gratitude,” he said.

He urged Ghanaians to live the spirit of giving by contributing to the growth of educational institutions and communities, saying: “For when a society and alumni give back, universities rise and nations advance”.
