He said the lack of a reliable transport system hampered students’ ability to conduct fieldwork and participate in off-campus activities such as research conferences.

“Travelling all over the country to undertake research projects is so demanding yet we do not have any mode of transport that will enhance the movement of students across the country,” he said.

Urgent need

Speaking at a leadership lecture at the University of Ghana, Legon, Mr Angsongna said “The primary aim of GRASAC-UG is to conduct relevant research work to help the country and we urgently need a transport system to enhance our work.

“It is through this that we can, as a study body, support the mission of the University of Ghana to become a world-class research-intensive institution,” he said.

The empowerment and leadership lecture, which was on the theme: “Transformational leadership in contemporary Ghana”, was organised by the GRASAG-UG. The event attracted people from all walks of life, including the Okyenhene, Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin; the President of the National House of Chiefs, Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi II; the Okyenhemaa, Nana Adutwumwaa Dokua; the Dean of Students Affairs of the University of Ghana, Legon, Professor Roseline Kyerematen, and other traditional leaders.

Inadequate accommodation

The GRASAG-UG president said the association had continually strived to improve the quality of educational and research work, as well as enhance its members’ leadership experience.

To that effect, he said the association had organised numerous academic and research programmes, alongside leadership summits which had provided invaluable opportunities for personal and professional growth.

“Our collaboration with the university to improve internet connectivity on campus is a testament to our dedication to enhancing academic and research work,” he said.

Research grants

He also appealed to the government and other stakeholders to support graduate students with research grants or funding to enable them to complete their research work on time.

Expressing the GRASAG-UG’s support for the Vice-Chancellor’s initiative, One Student, One Laptop, Mr Angsongna also urged other stakeholders to support the initiative since it was a “vital programme in helping students with their academic work”.

Beacon of transformative leadership

The president of GRASAG-UG lauded the Okyenhene for championing environmental conservation and described the Okyenhene as being “a beacon of transformative leadership” in Ghana.

He said celebrating the 25th anniversary as the Okyenhene, Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin had made significant strides in environmental conservation, education and health care.

“Under his visionary leadership, numerous initiatives have been launched to protect our natural resources and promote sustainable development,” he said.
