UENR students win 2022 petroleum engineering quiz
Students from the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) in Sunyani in the Bono Region were crowned champions in the 2022 edition of the petroleum and engineering quiz for students dubbed PetroBowl Championship.
This was after they beat students from the University of Mines from Tarkwa (UMaT) in the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Ghana Chapter Student Conference final held in Accra.
The team, that represented UENR’s Department of Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering, defeated the 3-time defending champions from UMaT by 30 – 10 points in the final.
UENR had dominated the 2022 competition in various rounds and especially in the semi-final where they won 90-40 points against the University of Ghana.
Led by team captain Vincent Nana Boah Amponsah, the SPE UENR President, other team members were Giftson Aggrey, Cornelius Dorsogilaa, and Mike Fred McNaughton Eshun.
Their victory marked UENR’s first-ever national PetroBowl title, solidifying the department’s rising reputation in Ghana’s energy education sector.
The PetroBowl, organised by the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE), challenges participants on technical petroleum engineering concepts, from drilling to reservoir engineering, as well as broader energy industry trends.
The win for UENR students highlighted the university’s Department of Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering’s commitment to excellence, backed by an industry-aligned curriculum and strong partnerships with key players like Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) and Ghana Gas Company.
Nathaniel Nimo Yeboah and Ken Antwi were the coaches for the students, along with faculty advisors including Dr. Yaw Akyampon Boakye-Ansah, head of the department, who played crucial roles in preparing the team for success.
The competition was judged by a panel of experts with academic and industry experience including Emmanuel Acheaw and Justice Sarkodie as lecturers who provided technical evaluation.
Other professionals like Christopher Nkansah, a leading ESG consultant and Petroleum Engineer, brought real-world sustainability insights and engineers Ernest Adomako and Mark Sowah-Laryea, brought field expertise to ensure the contest met global standards.
UENR’s win secured them a spot at the SPE PetroBowl Africa Regional or Global Championship in Houston, Texas, in October 2022.
