
Institute organises campus recruitment programme at UG
The Confucius Institute at the University of Ghana has inaugurated a Cultural Exchange Centre at Fortune City in Accra to strengthen the relationship between Ghana and China.
The centre is expected to run programmes such as Chinese Language proficiency, Business Chinese, Tea Culture and Chinese Martial Art-Kunfu and Chinese Calligraphy.
The others are Traditional Chinese Medicine, Chinese Shadow Boxing-Taichi, among others.
Launch
At the inauguration of the centre on Monday, the Director of the Confucius Institute at the University of Ghana, Dr Meilian Mei, said the courses ran at the centre were expected to strengthen the bilateral ties between the two countries which dated back to the era of independence.
“We believe that we are one and that China and the rest of the world, including Ghana, are now coming together because of a number of converging reasons and it is just proper to deepen our relationship in other to realise our dreams,” she said.
In 2007, Sunda Real Estates Company partnered with the institute to organise a campus recruitment programme at the University of Ghana which was well patronised by many students.
Motivation
Dr Mei said the success of that programme at the university and other parts of the country motivated them to inaugurate the centre to further deepen the bond of friendship between the two countries.
She said it was with that belief and high spirit of building a strong friendship, that the centre decided to host the cultural exchange programme within the Sunda Real Estates.
She announced that the centre would have a library to outline many educational exchange programmes for students and the community members.
For his part, the Managing Director of Sunda Real Estate Company Limited, Li Wei, said the Confucius Institute was currently offering Chinese Language proficiency and the Chinese Culture course at eight teaching sites with an enrolment of more than 3000 Ghanaian students.
He said with the recommendation of the company, more than 120 Ghanaian students had obtained scholarship with other Chinese for their PhD, MA, for a one-year study in China.
Achievement
“The institute cannot make its achievements without the support from Chinese enterprises in Ghana. Sunda (GH) Real Estates Company Limited is one of those that has provided support for the institute” he said.
Teachers and students from the various senior high schools in the Fortune City community, who took part in the opening programme, took time off to learn Chinese Calligraphy and other Chinese Art.
