3 Health insurance providers suspended

The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has suspended three more health facilities from providing services for subscribers of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

The North Western Eye Centre and the Community Clinic, both at Mataheko, and the Family Maternity Home at Dansoman, all in Accra, have been suspended for offences ranging from illegally taking money from subscribers for services already covered under the NHIS, operating under poor standards and/or inflating claims.

A statement issued by the NHIA said whereas the North Western Eye Centre had been suspended for one month, the Community Clinic and the Family Maternity Home had been suspended indefinitely.

It explained that the one-month suspension of the North Western Eye Centre was subject to the implementation of recommendations made by the NHIA.

Reasons

The statement said the infractions for which the health facilities were suspended contradicted existing agreements between the NHIA and the service providers, noting that the offences came to light following routine clinical audit inspections carried out at those health facilities.

“The NHIA finds the conduct of these facilities a breach of contract and, therefore, it is unacceptable for them to continue providing services on account of the NHIS when they cannot adhere to basic conditions of engagement,” it said.

Adwoa Boatemaa

Last week, the NHIA suspended the Adwoa Boatemaa Memorial Clinic from attending to NHIS subscribers.

It urged NHIS subscribers to visit other NHIS-accredited health facilities with their cards for service.

“The NHIA remains committed to ensuring quality standards and will do whatever it takes in the remit of its mandate to ensure that the interest of the card holder is protected,” it said.
