38,229 Commercial drivers trained in road safety measures
The Road Safety and Transportation Consultancies (RSTC), a road safety entity, has trained 38,229 commercial drivers in the country in road safety skills as part of measures to help prevent accidents on the roads.

The exercise was conducted under the Driver Management Science (DMS) module of the organisation with sponsorship from the Council for Technical and Vocational Education Training (COTVET).
In the Greater Accra Region, for instance, 13,121 drivers benefited from the training exercise.
The drivers were trained in three thematic areas such as road safety, customer care and road safety campaign.
Graduation
The graduation ceremony, which brought together stakeholders in the transportation sector including the Road Safety Commission (RSC), Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service and other drivers unions, was held in Accra .
Education
The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Founder of RSTC, Mr Godfred Akyea-Darkwa, urged the drivers to implement the skills they had acquired to make positive impact on the roads.
He said there was the need for continuous education and training to keep the drivers abreast of the changing trends in the transport sector.
“Sustenance is crucial to achieving a long-term national objective of preventing crashes resulting from the negative attitudes and behaviours by commercial drivers,” he said.

For his part, a lecturer at the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA), Dr Kodjo Ofosu Asare, urged the GPRTU to set up a special fund to cater for the education and training of drivers in adopting innovative road safety measures.
He also advocated an award scheme to honour diligent drivers to encourage them and also motivate their colleagues to ensure good road manners.
“There is the need to incorporate Information and Communications Technology (ICT) system in the training of drivers to ensure effective monitoring and evaluation of their work,” he said.
Special recognition
The National Secretary of GPRTU, Mr Stephen Okudzeto, and the current and former national chairmen of the union, Nana Kwame Kumah and Alhaji Yaw Manu were all presented with certificates of honour in recognition of their contributions to ensuring discipline on the roads.
The 28 district coordinators of the union in the Greater Accra Region also received certificates on behalf of their drivers in their respective areas.
