The restructured YEA is set to engage about one million youth through its modules such as the Youth in Sanitation, Community Teaching Assistants and Youth in Agriculture.

Advice

The Executive Director of the YEA, Mr Kobina Beecham, who reviewed the graduation parade in Accra, urged the graduands to exhibit a high sense of professionalism in the discharge of their duties.

He said the level of discipline the beneficiaries had exhibited on the parade grounds was an indication that they had picked up the requisite skills with which they would support the prison officers they would be working with at the various prison facilities in the country.

Mr Beecham appealed to the Ghana Prisons Service to, as a matter of urgency, take the graduands through the rudiments of the prisons job ‘so that after their two years’ experience, the service can absorb them fully into the prison system’.

He further indicated that his outfit was committed to fulfilling its mandate of not only employing  100,000 youth this year, but also equipping them with employable skills.

Course and awards

The graduands were taken through courses such as drill, security searches and escorting, interpersonal skills, overview of the Ghana Prisons Service, prison gate duties, first aid, inmates and the prison environment, and prisoner disturbances.

The Best in Order of Merit went to Mr Francis Anyetei Anang, while the Best in Drill also went Mr Tovour D. Maxwell, with Grace Asasey receiving the Commandant’s Award.

dignitaries who graced the occasion included the Member of Parliament for Telensi, Mr Benson Baba Tongo; the Director of Prisons in charge of Human Resource Development, Mr Kwame Kuma Kpeli; the Commandant of the Ghana Prisons Training School, Mr Mark Agbosu, and other officials from the YEA.
