According to the Eastern Regional Police Commander, DCOP Akuribah Yaagy, the victims, in their statements to the police, claimed they were lured to visit those spiritualists through adverts on radio and television.

The suspects are currently in the hands of the police. They are 32-year-old Nana Yaw Sofehu, also known as Togbe Shittor; Farouk Alhassan, alias Okomfo Anokye Ketewa, also 32; Ibrahim Alhassan, 26, and Adjei Emmanuel, alias Agbey, 31.

The rest are Alhaji Ibrahim and Simon Quao, alias Nana Dzakpata.

At a meeting with the media in Koforidua, DCOP Akuriba Yaagy warned residents of the region to be wary of such spiritualists who claimed to have the ability to double money.

He said the dockets on all the cases were being prepared for the attention of the Attorney General's Department.

The offence

According to DCOP Yaagy, Togbe Shittor, who operates from his base at Kukurantumi, has defrauded seven people to the tune of GH¢42,364.

Similarly, Okomfo Anokye Ketewa, who operates from Okorase, near Koforidua, has defrauded three people to the tune of GH¢13, 630.

Ibrahim Alhassan, who is also based at Okorase, has allegedly robbed his victim of GH¢6,900, while Agbey, who practises his trade at Koforidua Zongo, has succeeded in duping two victims of GH¢23,500.

The police, however, did not give details of the offence of Nana Dzakpata, who is based at Adawso, and Alhaji Ibrahim, who resides at Oyoko.

New trend

DCOP Yaagy noted, "Of late, these fraudulent acts have assumed a different dimension, with suspects now portraying themselves either on radio or television stations or through huge billboards as being able to provide solutions to financial problems by doubling or multiplying money presented to them.”

He appealed to the National Media Commission, the Ghana Journalists Association and traditional medicine control bodies to step up their regulatory roles and sanction media houses that advertised such misleading information.

He said metropolitan, municipal, and district assemblies must also consider reviewing the granting of permits for the erection of billboards by these spiritualists.
