Dubbed ''Operation Let the  Roads Be Clear'', the drivers were arrested at areas such as Morrow Market, Dr Mensah, Bremang Junction, CAF, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Oforikrom and Alabar.

Briefing the Daily Graphic, the Deputy Ashanti Regional MTTD Commander,  Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Mr Charles Ahiamale, explained that the operation had become necessary in view of the haphazard nature some drivers,  especially commercial drivers, had been parking in the metropolis to pick passengers.

He said the activities of those drivers contributed immensely to the unbearable traffic jams during peak hours on the road.

According to Mr Ahiamale, some commercial drivers had turned the bus stops and other areas of the roads into loading stations.

He said the investigations also revealed that most of such recalcitrant drivers were ''floating drivers'' who did not belong to any registered drivers union or lorry station.

Mr Ahiamale said the operation would be sustained to ensure that there was free flow of traffic, while those drivers refusing to either join a transport union or load from a lorry station became law abiding.

As of the time of filing this report, all the 80 drivers were being processed for court.
