AAMUSTED inaugurates first robotic centre

STEM power Incorporated, an Ethiopian-based engineering firm, has freely set up a robotic and Innovation Laboratory (RIL), at the Akenten Appiah-Menka University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development (AAMUSTED) in Kumasi.

Estimated at $20,000, the facility has been strategically positioned to make it accessible to the tertiary students as well as students in neighbouring basic and senior schools in the metropolis.

AAMUSTED is the first institution in the country to benefit from a targeted 334,900 students in sub-Saharan Africa annually, to be trained in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

The first batch of 30 students have already been enrolled on the programme.

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Frederick Kwaku Sarfo, in a speech read on his behalf by the Pro VC, Professor Isaac Boateng, at the inauguration of the laboratory, said the university was indeed grateful to STEMpower, “for the equipment and their engineers who have been with us for nearly a week now, to help with the installation and set-up of this laboratory”.

He said by incorporating robotics into “our TVET/STEM education, the university was preparing its students to gain a competitive edge in the job market, develop essential skills, and prepare for the technologies that were shaping our future”.

“With this laboratory, we have also positioned our students to acquire robotic and artificial intelligence (AI) competencies that are necessary to investigate and engineer practical solutions to our problems as a nation”, he explained.

He said the university had already begun exploring the possibilities of collaborating with some STEM model SHSs so they could take advantage of its expertise and facilities to boost the training at the secondary level.

“This milestone, arguably, positions AAMUSTED as an important next step for all the basic and senior high school students pursuing STEM education in Ghana”, the VC emphasised.

Also present were the Head of Centre for Artisanal Skills Training and Development (CASTD), Dr Albert Awopone; and Yohannes Bogale Fentie and Eyob Aychew Teferra, both engineers from STEMpower Incorporated.
