According to her, the attitudes and behaviour exhibited by accountants in the provision of services have a great impact on the economic well-being of the country.

Professor Opoku-Agyeman made these observations in a speech read on her behalf at the 22nd graduation and admission ceremony of the Institute of Chartered Accountants (ICA-Ghana) in Accra last Saturday.

The ceremony saw the graduation of 223 Chartered Accountants (CA) and 15 Accounting Technicians Scheme West Africa (ATSWA), as well as the admission of 197 new members into the institute.

Efficacy of the profession

Prof. Opoku-Agyeman explained that the accounting profession was needed in the country’s quest to achieve economic development.

“The relevance of the profession should not be lost on us. An accounting profession that is not well grounded is a liability to us as a nation and a threat to national development,” she observed.

She reiterated the government’s support in providing the necessary requirements that would enable any profession, particularly accounting, to conform to high governance standards.

Commendation

Professor Opoku-Agyemang lauded the persevering spirit and dedication exhibited by the staff members of the institute in the execution of its operations.

“I extend appreciation to the institute in complementing government’s effort for quality assurance in tertiary education. Your institute has served our country with great distinction. Your choice of courses is appropriate and relevant to meeting the challenges in these changing times,” she told the staff members.

Addressing the ceremony, the Chair of ICAG, University of Ghana Business School (Legon), Professor Jane Ande, said the country needed the expertise of accountants to help in its rapid development.

Professor Ande, who is also the first female Professor of Accounting in Nigeria urged the graduates to stand their grounds as they ventured into the job market and frequently keep themselves abreast of day-to-day activities by reading newspapers and journals.
