Accra Brewery provides water for Abodobi community

Accra Brewery Limited (ABL), in partnership with World Vision Ghana (WVG), has constructed a GH¢40,000 borehole for the people of Abodobi in the Fanteakwa District in the Eastern Region.

The project, initiated under World Vision’s improved socio-economic empowerment programme, is to address the lack of potable water in the community, which has an approximate population of 900.

The two organisations undertook the construction of the borehole as well as the implementation of sanitation and hygiene interventions to ensure that the various sectors of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) are holistically implemented in the identified area.

The inaugural ceremony was witnessed by the Member of Parliament (MP) for Fanteakwa South, Mr Kofi Okyere Agyekum; the District Chief Executive, Mr Abass Fuseini, and the parliamentary aspirant on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Ms Abigail Elorm Akwambea Mensah, as well as some members of the community.

At the ceremony, the Corporate Affairs Manager of ABL, Mr Cyrus de Graft-Johnson, noted that the provision of the borehole would create a conducive environment for teaching and learning and also improve livelihoods.

“The availability of safe water will also result in improved health outcomes by reducing the effect of water-borne diseases,” he stated.

Mr DeGraft-Johnson added that “through World Vision, we noticed that academic work in the area is seriously affected because the children queue for water in the morning before they leave for school.  Both teachers and pupils, therefore, get to school late. During the dry season, for instance, school attendance is greatly affected as the children have to travel to other areas to look for water.

“But with this intervention, all these problems will be a thing of the past.  We also expect improved sanitation in the school and community, as well as improved hygienic behaviour and practices,” he added.

World Vision

In his remarks, the National Director of World Vision, Ghana, Mr Hubert Charles, said the organisation was committed to partnering corporate institutions and other development partners to increase access to safe water and improved sanitation for children and their families in deprived communities.

He commended Accra Brewery Limited for supporting efforts at providing safe water to deprived communities in Ghana.

Mr Charles hinted that his organisation would continue to invest in and enter into strategic partnerships to scale up water, sanitation and hygiene interventions across the country, particularly in very remote and difficult-to-reach communities.
