Ghana Police reopen roads in Accra after Democracy Hub Protest standoff
The Ghana Police Service has reopened several major roads in Accra after a three-day closure due to a standoff with protesters from the Democracy Hub. The roads had been blocked as part of a special police operation following failed negotiations over the protest route.

The Democracy Hub protest, led by convener Oliver Barker-Vormawor, resulted in significant disruption after police and organizers could not agree on a route for the demonstration. This led to the closure of major roads from September 21 to 24, impacting traffic flow in the city.
Barker-Vormawor was arrested during the protest, along with about 40 other demonstrators. According to the police, his arrest was related to "various unlawful acts" committed during the protest. The police also noted that the road closures were necessary to maintain public safety and prevent further disruptions.
In a statement issued on Monday evening, September 23, the Ghana Police Service thanked the public for their patience and cooperation during the road closures. "The Ghana Police Service wishes to inform the general public that at 6 pm today, 23rd September 2024, the Police opened all the roads that were closed to traffic as part of the Police Special Operations within Accra," the statement read.
The reopened roads were initially blocked to prevent potential clashes between police and protesters, with diversions put in place throughout the city. The affected routes included:
- Traffic from the Central Business District (CBD) to Independence Avenue, blocked at the AU Roundabout.
- Traffic from the AU Roundabout was diverted to Castle Road, passing Ridge Roundabout and continuing to the Kanda Highway.
- Traffic from Madina heading towards Accra was redirected at the 37 Roundabout, with alternative routes provided via Obasanjo Highway and Dr. Liman Highway (Kanda Highway).
Motorists using these routes were significantly impacted over the three days, with police officers from the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) deployed to assist with traffic management and diversions.
The police have assured the public that they will continue to maintain law and order following the reopening of the roads, ensuring safety for all residents and motorists.
