Adentan Municipality soon to have magistrate court

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Adentan Municipal Assembly (AdMA), Mr Benjamin Baroson Angenu, has disclosed that the assembly is working around the clock to establish a municipal magistrate court to deal with cases of sanitation and nonpayment of tax.

He stressed the need for a municipal magistrate court, saying it would help deal with offenders who committed communal crimes such as  wife battery, defaults on rate payment and child abuse.

In an interview with the Daily Graphic in Accra, Mr Angenu said those found guilty by the court would be made to undertake community services and pay fiscal penalties. The ultimate purpose for establishing the court is to afford offenders the opportunity to learn from their mistakes and make amends.

“I expect that this will go a long way to bring about improvement in service delivery as well as enhance the community’s response to activities that are organised by the assembly,” he said.

Pay rates

He noted that money received from rates that were charged residents was one way of generating revenue that was used to develop the municipality. Mr Angenu therefore urged residents to pay their taxes diligently in order to avoid the unpleasant consequences of being sent to court.

He said it had become necessary that the assembly relied on its internally generated funds because relying solely on the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF) could cause difficulties if disbursement of the fund was delayed.

Commends GWCL

He commended the Ghana Water Company Limited for establishing a branch of its office in the district since it would provide answers to any difficulties the people might have with water supply.

He said there were plans to extend pipe-borne water to areas that were yet to benefit from water supply from the GWCL. Meanwhile, he said areas without water would be provided with mechanised boreholes.

The MCE therefore urged residents to support the assembly in its development efforts and endeavour to also attend town council meetings in order to be apprised of growth in the municipality.
