AESL calls for govt contracts

The Architectural and Engineering Services Limited (AESL) has called on the government to award it at least 80 per cent of all public sector projects.

The Board Chairman of AESL, Dr Kwame Asamoah, said the company had built a rejuvenated expertise in its operations to handle government projects with competence.

He said the engineering outfit had repositioned itself to undertake major infrastructure projects in the built environment.

He said this last Monday at a ceremony to outdoor 10 new Toyota pickups and one Land Cruiser procured by the AESL to enhance its monitoring activities in its offices in the regions.

He said since assuming office, the board and the management had instituted pragmatic measures to improve the fortunes of AESL and had cleared most of its outstanding legacy debt.

Assurance

Dr Asamoah assured the government that the AESL would work diligently towards meeting Ghana’s long-term socio-economic goal of Ghana Beyond Aid when given the mandate to handle projects within the public sector.

“As a board, we will continue to work assiduously to provide the strategic direction of the company in support of the President’s vision to build a highly industrialised society,” he said.

The Managing Director of AESL, Mr Isaac Agyei Marfo, said many sector ministers had no idea of the company’s scope of work but stressed that the AESL was poised to be the leader in the built environment in the coming years.

Ceremony

The Minister of Works and Housing, Mr Atta Akyea, expressed the hope that the new vehicles would improve the operations of the outfit.

He said his office would ensure that arrangements were made for the AESL to undertake some projects within the various ministries.

AESL

The AESL is a practising professional group of consulting architects, civil, structural, electrical and mechanical engineers, land and quantity surveyors.

It was established as an agency of the Ministry of Works and Housing to provide consultancy services in engineering and architecture to government departments, organisations, para-statal organisations, commercial houses, and individuals.

The agency also undertakes the survey and design of bridges, irrigation works, water supplies, sewerage systems, soils and foundation studies, as well as the testing of construction materials and the valuation and appraisal of properties.

It is credited with several public sector projects, including the construction of a 60-bed maternity block for the La General Hospital in Accra, rehabilitation of Essipon and Baba Yara stadia, construction of administration blocks and staff bungalows for district assemblies.

It also supervises civil engineering and related projects and provides quality control services for contractors, designers, and other consulting engineers through its geo-technical laboratories.
