African women in leadership to meet in Washington
This year’s conference on African Women in Leadership is scheduled to take place in Washington, DC, USA, from August 17 to 21.

The conference, which is held annually, is organised by the African Women in Leadership Organisation (AWLO), a non-governmental organisation (NGO).
The organisation has the objective of advancing the status of women in leadership positions on the African continent and it does this by offering a platform for women to present themselves favourably for attention.
The conference will be climaxed with an awards ceremony, a fashion show depicting popular trends in African dressing and a gala dinner.
At the gala, African women who have demonstrated excellence and creativity in their various fields of endeavours and have, in addition, contributed to the advancement of the African woman will be honoured.
Sparkzuta Model and Advertising Agency, a modelling agency in Ghana, is one of a number of fashion houses that have been invited to showcase African designs and prints to a global audience at the conference.
Platform for knowledge sharing
The event also provides a conducive opportunity for networking, mentoring and sharing of ideas among women who attend the conference as a means of promoting self-development.
Ghana played host to the maiden AWLO conference in 2009, Nigeria in 2010, Ghana again in 2011, The Gambia in 2012, Nigeria in 2013 and Atlanta, USA, in 2014.

Growth of AWLO
The growth of AWLO over the years is largely attributable to the strong, active and vibrant chapters that it has in Africa and the US at both county and state levels.
According to the organisers, each year the atmosphere at the conference has been one of inspiration, empowerment and sisterhood.
At the meetings, solidarity and cohesion of the membership is enhanced, actions implemented during the previous year are discussed, and shared goals and objectives for the coming year articulated.
Through its awards ceremony, AWLO celebrates women achievers in Africa and is involved in advocacy at the highest level to influence change and investment in girls.
