Akuapem North donates power plant to Tetteh Quarshie hospital

The presentation of the plant became necessary because of the frequent power outages, which had adversely affected the operations of the hospital.

The hospital generating set had become faulty following the power outages, making it difficult for the hospital to attend to emergency cases.

The management of the hospital had been compelled by the circumstances to send emergency cases and perishables drugs such as insulin and anti-rabies vaccines and blood to other hospitals.

Dead bodies were also relocated to other mortuaries.

Help

In view of the disturbing development, the municipal assembly, in consultation with the Eastern Regional Co-ordinating Council (ERCC), bought the generating plant for the hospital.

Making the presentation, the Regional Minister, Mr Antwi -Boasiako Sekyere, said the government was aware of the numerous challenges facing the hospital and promised to tackle them.

One of the problems, he said, was the frequent breakdown of elevators, which affected the movement of patients, especially pregnant women, to the maternity and labour wards upstairs.

He was happy that the new plant was big enough to power the whole facility at the same time unlike the old one that was only taking care of some parts of the hospital.

Location of hospital

The minister said the hospital was strategically located since it was the only port of call in emergency situations on the Accra-Akuapem Ridge-Koforidua stretch.

He said the government was committed to giving the hospital a facelift for it to meet the increasing demand for quality health care from the people of Akuapem and beyond.
Mr Sekyere also announced that four new elevators had been allocated to the hospital and would soon be delivered.

The Medical Superintendent of the hospital, Dr Mawuli Kotope Gyakobo, expressed appreciation to the municipal assembly and the ERCC for the timely intervention.
He promised that with the emergency power plant, the hospital would give the best of healthcare delivery to patients.

The Benkumhene of Akuapem Traditional Area and Chief of Larteh, Osabarima Enyine Asiedu Okoo Ababio, praised the government for the procurement of the generating plant and expressed the hope that it would resolve all the energy challenges facing the hospital.
