24th African Athletics Championships in Accra: Athletes, Journalists decry poor organisation

The ongoing 24th African Athletics Championships in Accra has come under criticism from athletes, journalists and some officials over what they describe as poor organisation and logistical challenges at the continental event.

Concerns raised by participants include delays in transportation, inadequate communication, accreditation difficulties, scheduling inconsistencies, and limited access to competition and media facilities, including access to internet.

Some athletes complained about long waiting hours for transport between hotels and competition venues, while others expressed frustration over delays in event schedules and insufficient coordination by organisers.

A number of journalists covering the championship also cited challenges with accreditation processing, internet connectivity, workspace arrangements and access to timely competition information.

The championship, which has attracted athletes and officials from across Africa, was expected to showcase Ghana’s readiness to host major international sporting events.

However, critics say operational setbacks have affected the overall experience for competitors and media personnel.

Despite the organisational concerns, competitions have continued at the event, with athletes competing in various track and field disciplines for medals and qualification opportunities.

Officials are yet to issue a comprehensive response to the complaints, although some organisers have reportedly assured participants that efforts are being made to address the logistical and operational difficulties.

The 24th African Athletics Championships remains one of the biggest athletics events on the African sporting calendar, bringing together elite athletes from across the continent to compete in multiple disciplines.
