Alex Soros: President Mahama holds talks with son of billionaire George Soros

President John Dramani Mahama has held discussions with Mr. Alex Soros, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Open Society Foundations (OSF), as part of efforts to deepen international partnerships and consolidate Ghana’s democratic and economic gains.

The meeting, which took place on Friday, focused on Ghana’s economic resurgence, commitment to democratic governance, and the country’s stabilising role in the West African sub-region.

President Mahama used the occasion to brief Mr. Soros—son of billionaire philanthropist George Soros—on the government’s ongoing reforms, encapsulated in the administration’s ‘Reset Agenda’. The agenda, he explained, seeks to rebuild national confidence, strengthen anti-corruption institutions, and champion inclusive economic growth.

“There was a lot of corruption and a lack of accountability. So, we came in with a comprehensive programme to strengthen anti-corruption institutions,” President Mahama said, referencing his government’s “Operation Recover All the Loot (ORAL)” initiative. “You will continue to hear of prosecutions and other measures against individuals who have mismanaged public resources, as we steadfastly pursue accountability.”

Touching on economic performance, President Mahama revealed that the Ghanaian economy is on a strong recovery path, buoyed by strategic fiscal and monetary measures. He highlighted a 42 per cent appreciation of the Cedi and a significant decline in the debt-to-GDP ratio, adding that the government was aiming to bring inflation down to single digits in the near future.

On the regional front, President Mahama assured Mr. Soros of Ghana’s commitment to ECOWAS integration and efforts to mend fractured relations with the Sahelian nations of Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger.

“We held an ECOWAS meeting barely three weeks ago, and happily, the whole mood has changed. There is now a clear appetite for rapprochement between ECOWAS and the three countries,” he said. “In the meantime, we all agreed to prioritise the free movement of people and goods across our borders and encourage transit trade.”

President Mahama also reaffirmed Ghana’s status as a beacon of democracy on the continent, with a constitutional tradition that has enabled peaceful political transitions for over three decades.

“We’ve had nine elections, all of which have been successful. And we’ve experienced several peaceful changes of government from one party to another, all of which have occurred smoothly,” he noted.

Mr. Soros, who is in the country as part of activities marking the 50th anniversary of ECOWAS, congratulated President Mahama on his re-election and commended his leadership.

He emphasised that the Open Society Foundations have historically supported ECOWAS’s regional integration goals and were particularly proud of milestones such as visa-free travel across the sub-region. Mr. Soros also expressed interest in partnering with Ghana on initiatives aimed at promoting governance, trade, and regional cooperation.

Apart from chairing the OSF Board, Alex Soros also serves on the investment committee of Soros Fund Management, a family office managing the Soros fortune.

The meeting concluded with both parties expressing optimism about future collaboration in areas of governance, regional peacebuilding, and socio-economic development.
