AMA demolishes structures at Mensah Guinea

A task force of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) yesterday demolished shops and illegal structures at Mensah Guinea, a slum behind the Centre for National Culture in Accra.

The exercise, which started around 8a.m., was supervised by the police.

The city authorities cited the insanitary conditions in the area and other places as a major contributory factor to the recent outbreak of cholera in the capital.

The AMA had carried out similar exercises at Agbogbloshie, Abuja and other areas in the city.

The timely intervention of the Assembly Member for the Osu Kinkawe Electoral Area, Mr Kotei Kotey, brought a temporary halt to the exercise as he pleaded with the task force to give the residents some days to relocate.

Speaking to the Daily Graphic, Mr Kotey said the three-day ultimatum given by the AMA to the residents to leave the place was inadequate since most of them could not find new accommodation within that period.

While admitting that the AMA had the authority to carry out the exercise, Mr Kotey described the plight of the residents as pathetic since majority of those ejected had been rendered homeless and indicated that it was the reason for his plea for them to be given more time to relocate.

“At the moment the residents do not have anywhere to go so we are pleading with the city authorities to give them enough time to relocate,” Mr Kotey said.

Mensah Guinea, located near the Centre for National Culture in Accra, has a population of about 3,000, comprising Ghanaians, Liberians, Nigerians, Senegalese and Ivorians.
