The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) says it has secured a US$3 million grant from the African Development Bank (AfDB) to support the implementation of the Accra Waste Separation and Composting Project, a flagship initiative aimed at transforming the city’s waste management system.
The grant, obtained with technical support from the C40 Cities Finance Facility (CFF), will serve as co-financing to accelerate project delivery and deepen Accra’s transition toward a climate-smart, sustainable waste management model.
The Waste Separation and Composting Project was chosen as one of only 18 successful proposals out of more than 1,000 submissions received across the continent.
According to officials, its strong climate mitigation potential, alignment with national and municipal climate targets, and demonstrated capacity to drive long-term circular economy solutions were key factors in its selection.
The project is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, increase waste diversion from landfills, expand recycling, and promote composting, ultimately repositioning Accra as a leader in sustainable urban waste practices. When fully implemented, it will strengthen waste processing efficiency, improve environmental health, and contribute significantly to the city’s broader climate resilience agenda.
Commenting, the Metropolitan Chief Executive, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, described the facility as a major milestone in the metropolis’ quest to build a cleaner and greener city.
“This grant represents a significant boost to our ongoing efforts to deliver a climate-resilient waste management system. The AMA remains deeply committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, enhancing environmental health and championing sustainable waste solutions across the city,” he said.
Mr Allotey expressed gratitude to the AfDB for the grant support and acknowledged the critical role played by the C40 Cities Finance Facility, funded by the Governments of Germany and the United Kingdom, which provided technical guidance throughout the project preparation and application process to the Climate Action Window.
