Aqua-culture stake-holders calls for a sector clean up

The Ghana Aqua-culture Stake holders (GAS) has called on government to take measures to clean up the fisheries industry.

GAS says it needs a comprehensive clean-up to help stop illegal activities that are spreading diseases and destroying the fish reserves in the country.

In a radio interview with Citi Fm monitored by Graphic Online, the founder of the Ghana Aqua-culture Stake-holders, Patricia Sarfo said government should take an immediate action to save the industry from collapsing.

Mrs Sarfo said that some fishers have brought illegal species which has ruined the water and an immediate clean-up exercise would help remedy the situation.

‘We are requesting for a clean up of the sector, we want the sector to be clean up like the financial sector.

'We want to see the broke players removed from the sector, because at the moment, we have certain operators who have brought in illegal species of fish which are really ruining our water bodies.

'The water bodies which is supposed to be for the next generation is being ruined by fish species which have been brought into the country.' she said.
