Ashanti Police Command interdicts 3 policemen; Man dies in operation

The Ashanti Regional Police Command has interdicted three of its men from the Konongo Division for their alleged role in the death of 36-year-old Kofi Amponsah, a resident of Adomfe, near Bompata in the Asante Akyem North District.

Amponsah is alleged to have died from brutalities meted out to him by General Sergeant Suleman Seidu, General Corporal Seth Agbango and General Lance Corporal Sailfu Yakubu during an operation to arrest drug peddlers at Adomfe last Monday.

The interdicted policemen were part of a nine-member team that went on the operation.

Interdiction

A statement issued by the Ashanti Regional Police Public Relations Officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Godwin Ahianyo, said even though nine policemen had taken part in the swoop, the three had been cited for their alleged involvement in the incident that led to Amponsah’s death.

The police are said to have arrested two suspects during last Monday’s operation in Adomfe but were allegedly attacked by residents, who pelted the police with stones.

It is claimed that in the process, one of the stones hit Amponsah, leading to his death.

The community members, however, denied the police version of the incident and rather accused the police of butchering the man.

Investigation

Meanwhile, the Ashanti Regional Police Command has tasked the Regional Police Professional Standards Bureau (PPSB) to institute internal investigations into the incident for further action.

The command called on the public to remain calm and allow independent investigations to unravel the circumstances leading to Amponsah’s death.
