The Asokwa Municipal Assembly has disbursed cheques and start-up items valued at GH¢130,000 to support 39 persons with disabilities (PWDs) through its share of the District Assemblies Disabilities Common Fund.

Beneficiaries received equipment for various trades, including sewing, hairdressing, welding, carpentry, shoemaking, plantain chip production, and cold store management. Some also received financial support to assist with medical and educational expenses.

At the presentation ceremony, the Asokwa Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Chief Akwannuasah Gyimah, highlighted that the periodic disbursements reflect the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government’s commitment to improving the welfare and livelihoods of PWDs.

“This is the 13th time the Asokwa Assembly, in collaboration with the Member of Parliament, has undertaken this statutory disbursement,” Chief Gyimah stated. He urged recipients to use the items effectively, encouraging the government to continue supporting the initiative.

“It is essential for us, as a municipality, to support and train PWDs. We are committed to keeping our streets free from beggars and ensuring PWDs have sustainable means of living,” the MCE added.

Social Welfare Department’s support

The Director of Social Welfare and Community Development for Asokwa Municipal Assembly, Mr. Dickson Frimpong, praised the MCE and assembly for consistently responding to the needs of PWDs and for continuing the PWD Common Fund disbursement for the 13th consecutive time.

He encouraged recipients to make the most of the start-up items aligned with their training, adding, “Your success depends on the choices you make. If all 39 beneficiaries put this support to good use, they will help make life bearable for themselves and their families.”
