Attitude of assembly members towards sanitation poor

The Head of Local Government Service, Mr Callistus Mahama, has expressed his dismay about the attitude of some assembly members towards achieving effective sanitation in the country.

He said it was their core function to ensure that waste management was effectively implemented in their communities but “their attitude is, however, the other way.”

Mr Mahama made these remarks when he accompanied management staff of the ZoomAlliance Company to inspect some project sites in Accra last Thursday.

The sites included the Odorkor Market, Madina Aviation and Bawaleshie. It was observed that these areas which had earlier been engulfed in filth with heaps of rubbish had been cleared, drains cleared and refuse transported to a final disposal site.

It would be recalled that in September, the company, in collaboration with the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development, launched a one-month sanitation programme to evacuate refuse and to clear choked drains in some selected municipal and district assemblies within the Accra Metropolis.

The programme focused on markets with refuse collection points, communities with heaps of refuse and some drains.

It was also to reclaim evacuated lands by filling them with laterite and levelling them, identifying drains for dredging and cleaning as well as maintaining security presence to deter people from dumping refuse indiscriminately after the exercise.

Mr Mahama said he was impressed with the work done by the ZoomAlliance so far, and called on assembly members to be up and doing by being innovative and showing their support towards ensuring a clean environment in the country.

The Managing Director of the Zoom Alliance, Mr Agyenim Boateng Adjei, said the company was ready to partner the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) in combating filth in the country.

He also said environmental cleanliness was a shared responsibility and, therefore, everyone must be involved in the exercise to ensure a clean environment.
