Beauticians complain about fake products

The influx of fake and substandard cosmetic products on the market is gradually hampering the jobs of beauticians and professional hairdressers.

The President of the National Association of Beauticians and Hairdressers (NABH), Mrs Joyce Lamptey, has therefore called on the Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) to critically monitor the importation of such products, else its repercussions would overwhelm the country. The association has over 24,000 members nationwide.

Speaking at the sixth Salon Academy conference in Accra, she said most of the members of the association had become victims of fake cosmetic products.

“We have received complaints from all our members in all the regions about the invasion of fake products. Most of these products seem to dominate the few originals in the country. We are worried because this could destroy the profession,” Mrs Lamptey said.

Salon Academy

The Salon Academy Conference is organised annually by the leadership of NABH to equip members with new information to improve their work.

This year’s conference, which was on the theme: “To ensure that members feel a sense of belonging, the way forward,” attracted over 800 participants.

They were trained in modern trends of the profession and kept abreast of some new technical developments.

Certified product

Mrs Lamptey said one of the ways to address the issue of fake cosmetic products on the market was for the GSA to annually publish the list of all certified cosmetic products and furnish the association with copies of the list.

That, she said, would assist NABH to detect the fake cosmetics from the original ones. Mrs Lamptey also stressed the need for stakeholders to work and eliminate the perception that the profession was meant for dropouts.
