President Mahama being welcomed by the contractors working on the Berekum Water Project

Berekum water project to be completed in June this year

Rehabilitation and expansion works on the Berekum water supply system in the Brong Ahafo Region are scheduled for completion in June this year.

Work is about 96 per cent complete. Upon completion, the plant capacity will increase from 455,000 gallons to 3.95 million gallons per day.

However, the immediate post-rehabilitation capacity would be 2.4 million per day. The multimillion dollar project is financed by the World Bank.

On the last day of his three-day ‘Accounting to the People’ tour of the region last Thursday, President John Dramani Mahama inspected the project and expressed satisfaction about the progress of work.

Components

The project involves the construction of a new treatment plant, comprising aerators, rapid gravity filters, underground reservoir, pump house and a chemical building.

Besides, the distribution system is being increased from 60km to 139 km, while 10 new mechanised boreholes have been constructed to add to the existing ones.

Agenda

President Mahama said access to safe drinking water was high on the agenda of the government, that was why it continued to invest in the sector.

The Berekum water supply system is under the urban water development programme being implemented by the government to increase access to potable water in urban communities.

Berekum, with a population of about 79,000, is the capital of the Berekum Municipality and one of the major towns in the Brong Ahafo Region.

Roads

President Mahama also inspected the 20km Kyeremasu-Gambia Number Two road upgrading project.

The project forms part of the cocoa roads programme.

At Amaasu, the President acknowledged that improved road infrastructure would open up rural communities.

He said the road, on completion, would enable farmers to transport their produce to the urban centres for sale.

Earlier, the President inspected the inner ring road project in Sunyani, which is also part of the cocoa roads.
