Book on effects of divorce on children launched

A 133-page book which highlights the high rate of divorce among couples and its effects on children has been launched in Accra. Authored by Rev. Dr Victoria Otumfour-Neequaye, the Founder of the New York-based Agape Teaching Ministries, the book is titled, “What You Don’t Know About Love”?

At the launch, Rev. Otumfour-Neequaye disclosed that as an interpreter with 17 years, experience at the New York Family Court, she felt traumatised listening to the cases of Ghanaian couples seeking divorce.

She mentioned that the state of children in the United States after their parents had divorced was very pathetic as they were left to fend for themselves.

Outcome of broken homes

Concerned with the disastrous outcome of broken homes, Madam Otumfour-Neequaye said she embarked on an intensive programme to educate the people about the foundations of good marriage.

According to her, she went to churches and civil society groups and talked to them  about the importance of marriage, adding that in 1999 she also started a radio and television talk show.

After 35 years of sojourn in the United States, Rev. Dr Otumfuor-Neequaye returned to Ghana to continue her philanthropic work, and she put her ideas into a book to help  promote good marriage and curb divorce to a minimum.

Facilities for the needy

She is also putting up a home and school for orphans, children of single parents and teenage pregnant girls.

Dumega Raymond Okudzeto, President of Volta Foundation, who chaired the function, advised Ghanaians to read copies of the book to get tips to enrich their marital homes.

“There is a lot to be done to protect our children who are our future leaders; there is, therefore, the need to continue holding the family values together,” Dumega Okudzeto urged.
