Building construction affecting road at Adabraka

A number of residents of Adabraka, a suburb of Accra, have expressed outrage at a Lebanese businessman whose construction of a building is badly affecting an asphalted road near a place called Old Timers Spot in the community.

Upon a visit to the building site following a complaint made to it, the Daily Graphic realised that water that was used in constructing the massive six-storey building was directed onto the streets, resulting in the creation of huge potholes on the road  in front of the building.

The potholes are such that vehicles have to slow down considerably and  steer carefully in order not to break a ball joint.

The unacceptable practice has come at a time when the agencies responsible for roads are in dire need of funds to fix bad roads in the city.

According to the discontented residents, for close to two years, authorities in charge of roads in the city had not deemed it fit to bring the businessman to order.

They claimed that several attempts to get the owner of the building to stop destroying the street had fallen on deaf ears.

The practice of directing waste water onto streets is not only in Adabraka but also in many other places in the city and elsewhere.

On the Graphic Road, for instance, heavy duty trucks working on a project in front of Rana Motors are also causing damage to the road.

The trucks carry mud out of the company’s yard and drop it onto the streets, creating inconveniences for motorists as a result since that portion of the road becomes bumpy.

On the other hand, as the mud dries up, it collects on the sides of the road, turns into dust and creates inconveniences for both motorists and pedestrians alike.

Since it is a major road in the city, authorities cannot claim to have not seen the irregularity that is going on and call the contractor to order.

It is difficult to comprehend why such acts of disregard for rules and the environment always seem to involve non-citizens and the city authorities look on unconcerned and wait to be prompted by the media before they act.
